To understand the purpose and character of the C&EI one must consider the territory it served. C&EI not only served the needs of its Illinois and Indiana customers, it also became an important link providing a bridge to and from Chicago to railroads of the southeast and southwest. Its first class Passenger Service was well known in its territory and those who rode its trains remember it fondly.
